Countesthorpe is a large village and civil parish in the Leicestershire district of Blaby, with a population of 6,393 in Leicestershire. It is set in the beautiful countryside of England and was my home for many years. When we first moved there the population was much smaller but over the years as this has risen, the boundaries of the village have moved further out and in one direction it is almost attached to Blaby now.The railway line which ran from Leicester, to Rugby, England was opened in 1840 and closed on 1 February 1962. The village of Countesthorpe dates back to around 1200AD. Originally the land was part of a marriage settlement for Countess Judith, the niece of William the Conqueror. The Countess therefore called her wedding gift Countesthorpe. Thorpe means hamlet or small village When I moved to Countesthorpe in 1964 the rail tracks were gone, but the signal box, waiting room, platform and level crossing gates were still there.
